Wednesday Feb 6 – Belonging Before Becoming

Hey Nasties. Duane here. One of your board members. My very first run with East Nasty was 10 years ago. We ran the Riverside route that Wednesday. I’ve been honored to run with and serve the club in a number of ways ever since then. But heath issues have curbed my running career (I’m fine, just not as sharp-visioned as i once was), and it’s time to step aside. It seems only appropriate that this weeks run, my last as a board member, is also the Riverside route.

Route #6

Route #6: Riverside. The way we run this route has changed due to the repaving and restriping on Riverside Drive. RUN IN THE NEW BIKE LANES on the right (inside) median – NOT ON THE LEFT shoulder where we usually have run. When running on streets with bike lanes but no sidewalks, runners may take the bike lane running into traffic when it is safer. But be prepared to yield to bikes – they have the right of way. Riverside also is one of the darker routes we run, so please remember to wear something that creates or reflects light!

We meet at the corner of 11th & Holly at 6pm. We run every Wednesday – rain or shine, hot or cold. You can READ HERE for more details on how our Wednesday night runs work. If you are a run/walker and/or want to get a head start, meet at 5:45pm and join our Lasty Nasty Group. No Pint Night at NRC this month (we hope you were able to enjoy NRC’s epic birthday party this past weekend), so bring a change of clothes (or not) – and head over to 3 Crow or one of the other local establishments for a drink and/or some dinner after the run.

Speed Workouts

Our Tuesday night speed workouts begin this week. Tuesday nights at our regular spot at 11th & Holly at 6pm. These workouts are much more structured than our regular Wednesday night runs. So, don’t be late and be ready to run at promptly at 6pm.

Belonging Before Becoming

That first Wednesday night run of mine was a hot humid night in July of 2009. I wore a cotton t-shirt and some old tennis shoes over some tube socks. I was miserable. I didn’t know anything about dressing appropriately for athletic activity. I’m 100% sure i was the very last one to finish. But, I did finish. And got hooked. I made good friends. I was challenged. I was encouraged. I accomplished things and ran races i had never even dreamed of. I broke 2 hours for my Half Marathon PR. East Nasty became one of the most important parts of my life – because I felt like I belonged to it. East Nasty founder Mark Miller was one of the very first people I met when I moved to Nashville in 2004. One of the things we talked about way back then that has had a continuing impact on me is the idea of ‘belonging before becoming’. I think that’s one of the very best things about East Nasty. You don’t have to have becomea great runner or achieve some great running goal before you can know you belonghere. You just have to show up. We all run the same routes and distances each Wednesday. Some are faster than others, some are there to work on their tempo pace, some are there just to work off some calories, and some are there mostly for the post-run beers. But, we do it together as a community. We belong. And through that belonging, we become better. I think that’s at the heart of what Mark hoped to build with East Nasty. I think we are all proof that it has succeeded.

I’ll be there Wednesday night – you may or may not see me on the run, but i’ll definitely be at 3 Crow afterwards. Come raise a glass with me to the best damn running club anywhere. ENFL!!

Wednesday Jan 30 - Winter Is Here

Route #5

This Wednesday is one of our most popular runs: Route #5: Walking Bridge. It’s always fun to run across the bridge and through downtown. But running downtown comes with a little bit of extra traffic. So, we implore you - please cross the street only in crosswalks and intersections (NEVER in the middle of the road or darting out into traffic), stop at stop lights, and slow down and use caution at intersections. Please be respectful of and courteous to pedestrians on the sidewalks downtown. Remember that when you run with us you are representing our organization - and that our club’s safety, reputation, and standing in the community is a responsibility you share in. Thanks for doing your part!

We meet at the corner of 11th & Holly at 6pm. We run every Wednesday – rain or shine, hot or cold. And it's gonna be Jon Snow levels of COLD tonight - somewhere under 20 degrees they say. Be sure to dress in layers and wear a hat! Here's a great webtool from Runner's World on how to figure out what to wear in what temperatures and conditions: https://www.runnersworld.com/what-to-wear

You can READ HERE for more details on how our Wednesday night runs work. If you are a run/walker and/or want to get a head start, meet at 5:45pm and join our Lasty Nasty Group.

Half/Full Marathon Training

We had a great Saturday running our 5K/10K Time Trials for our Half and Full Marathon training groups. Your 5K time is a great piece of info to use when planning out your training paces and finish time goals for the half, full, or other races. The McMillan Running Calculator is a great tool - check it out at https://www.mcmillanrunning.com. There are also a few different calculators on Runner's World at https://www.runnersworld.com/pace-calculators.

Our weekly Tuesday night speed workouts begin next Tuesday - February 5th - at 6pm at our usual 11th & Holly location.

It's not too late to join our free training group - get info and sign up on our Half/Full Marathon Training Page. This Saturday we head to Percy Warner Park for some hill-tastic fun in one of our city's best treasures! There's also a potluck brunch after the run!

Free 5k and 10K Training at NRC!

If you're looking to train for something a little shorter than the half-marathon - say a 5K or 10K - or just to re-start your running game, our friends at Nashville Running Company are offering training starting Feb 9th for the Purity Dairy Dash in April. Training is FREE and with an encouraging and respectful group of awesome people. Hope to see you there! Get more info and sign-up at http://nashvillerunning.com/c25k/

Wednesday Jan 23 - Little Battles

The Weather

Gonna be chilly again this week - and maybe even some winter precipitation tonight. Our founder, Mark Miller, loves to run in the cold and rain. He wrote this a few years ago and it has stuck with me: "One thing I love about running is that you get to experience the elements. Who cares if it’s cold if all you do is go from your house, to your garage, to your office and back again? Who cares if it’s hot and humid if you never leave the air conditioning. When you run outdoors, you can’t avoid the weather, and I think that forcing yourself to run in less than ideal conditions is one of life’s little victories. Is it a really that big of a deal to run inside on a treadmill rather than running outside when it’s 30 degrees? Maybe not, but I am fully convinced that those seemingly insignificant little battles that we face in life are preparing us for the big battles that one day we inevitably will face. And knowing that you have the courage to suit up and run when it’s 30 degrees and raining is a small victory that will give you the confidence to face tougher challenges as they arise!"

Mark also says that there no such thing as inclement conditions – only inadequate preparation! So prepare for the cold and rain and join us outside tonight. Check nashvillesevereweather.com and follow them on Twitter for really clear, balanced, non-hyperbolic local weather info. Remember the rule is to dress for a cold weather run like you are going out for a hike in temperatures 20 degrees warmer that it really is. Don't over-dress - your body will heat up when you start running. Dress in layers. Make sure your base layer is moisture wicking and your outer layer protects you from the wind and rain. Most important piece of cold weather running gear? A hat. You lose most of your body heat through your head.

Route #4

We head back into Shelby Park this week for Route #4: The Big Shelby Loop. 99% percent of the time we need you to run on the left side of the road against traffic, but on this route it’s safer to run on the right side on Davidson Street once you’re in the park. When you make the right turn from Davidson to head up the Sevier/Naval hill, get back over to the left side of the road. Be sure to wear something that creates some light – it gets pretty dark on Davidson.

Tom King Half Marathon Water Stop!

Word has spread about our epic water stop at the 2018 Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon and we have been asked to provide our awesomeness to the Tom King Half Marathon on February 23. This will be an official water and Gatorade stop - located in Shelby Park. If you are not running the Tom King 1/2 And want to help out please email Jeremy at president@eastnastyforlife.com

Wednesday Jan 16 - Musica Out & Back
en_mapbanner_route_03-share.jpg

Route #3

This week is Route #3: Musica. ‘Musica’ is the name of the massive sculpture art piece at the center of the music row roundabout at the far end of the route. This is an out and back route, so you can choose your mileage. It’s about 4 miles if you turn around just after crossing the pedestrian bridge. It’s about 5 miles if you turn around at Cummins Station. And it’s about 6.3 if you do the whole thing. This route is a great way to see downtown, but there are lots of intersections and traffic on this route. Please be especially courteous, use crosswalks, and obey traffic signals - don't dart out into traffic!

We meet at the corner of 11th & Holly at 6pm. We run every Wednesday – rain or shine, hot or cold. You can READ HERE for more details on how our Wednesday night runs work. If you are a run/walker and/or want to get a head start, meet at 5:30pm and join our Lasty Nasty Group.

Wednesday Jan 9 - How It Works
en_mapbanner_route_02-share1.jpg

Route #2

This week we continue our 12 week cycle with Route #2: ‘Round the Bird. Also known as 'The Awkward Moment' because this is a figure-8 route that crosses over itself. Be sure to high five each other as you cross!

It gets pretty dark in parts of the park so remember to wear something that creates and reflects light. Safety is always our most important message. We share the roads and the park with walkers, cyclists, and cars – so, PLEASE, stay on the sidewalks or to the far left on the road, obey traffic signals and stop signs, and cross only in marked crosswalks.

And since we are back at the beginning of our cycle, this is a great opportunity for a refresher on how our runs work…

How It Works

We meet every Wednesday, year round, for a run at 6pm. This is our ‘main event’ and the best way to get plugged into the group. Rain or shine, hot or cold – we run. There is nothing to sign up to participate, no email list to join – just show up. We meet at the corner of 11th and Holly in East Nashville. We have 12 different runs (each one 3-6 miles) that we follow sequentially each week. There are usually around 100+ runners on any given Wednesday evening.

  1. Wednesday morning – Check this page for any updates and changes, and reacquaint yourself with that week’s route. Print out the route if you think you might get lost.
  2. As you are arriving, the map of the route for that night should be hanging on the porch of the yellow house.
  3. 5:45pm (5:30pm for routes #3 and #12) – The Lasty Nasties start their run.  Lasty Nasty is our walk/run group that starts before the main group. If you typically run slower than 12 minutes per mile you should consider joining this group. Here is their Facebook page - it's a great way to get connected to other run/walkers.
  4. 6:07pm – We begin announcements which should take about a minute or two.
  5. 6:10pm – Greet someone new, and prepare for your run.
  6. 6:11pm (ish) We don’t just start running en masse. We leave in pace groups, and someone will be starting those groups from fastest to slowest – starting usually with 7:30 and faster pace, and going in 30 second increments (7:30 – 8:00, 8:00 – 8:30, etc…), with a short gap between groups. The last group is 10 minutes per mile and over.
  7. During the run safety is priority number one! We encourage you to run as hard as you want, but this is not a race. So, (1) run on the sidewalk as much as possible, (2) wear something that creates or reflects light, (3) be careful at intersections, don’t assume cars are going to stop, and (4) stop if one of your fellow runners needs help.
  8. Post-run – There is nothing permanent scheduled for after the run, but there are often post run pint nights or other happenings. Bring a change of clothes (or not) and head over to 3 Crow or one of the other local establishments for a drink and/or some dinner. Of course, please be exceptionally nice to your servers and help our rep!

Parking: It’s getting more and more difficult to navigate traffic and parking in the 5 Points area with all the growth. You can find street parking in and around 5 Points, but be mindful of fire hydrants and street corners (30 feet minimum distance per the city), No Parking signs, construction areas, and blocking in other cars. Do not park behind the YCAP building ('the yellow house') or the YCAP gym - you will be towed! Always lock your vehicle and hide your valuables – don’t be an easy ticket or target.

Volunteer to clean the cups, get a chance to win 100 bucks!

Route #1

Being the first Wednesday night of 2019, we will start at the beginning of our 12 week cycle with Route #1: One Hilly 5(ish)K. This is a great week to join us for the first time, to re-join us, and/or to invite someone new! The run is easy 3 miles out to Shelby Park and back.

We should have some classic Middle Tennessee January weather - a little chilly and drizzly, so dress accordingly. It gets pretty dark in parts of the park so remember to wear something that creates and reflects light. Safety is always our most important message. We share the roads with walkers, cyclists, and cars – so, PLEASE, stay on the sidewalks or to the far left on the road, obey traffic signals and stop signs, and cross only in marked crosswalks.

Route #12: The Nasty

Here we are once again. This week we culminate our 12 run series with our signature run: Route #12: The Nasty! 6 miles of the worst best hills in East Nashville. We have 12 different routes that we cycle through on Wednesdays, which means that we run each one 4 times per year. (We fill in the gaps with some random runs.) So it works out that we get to experience each route in each season (more or less). So this is the ‘winter’ Nasty – it will be chilly and dark – so be sure to wear something that creates or reflects light! Then throw on a hoodie and come down to 3 Crow Bar to celebrate completing the run with all your peeps!

en_mapbanner_route_11-share.jpg

Thanks to everyone who came out to our holiday party at Smith and Lentz last week! It was a blast!

Route #11

This week is Route #11 – The Church Run. East Nashville is one of the oldest communities in Nashville with many historic buildings dating back to the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. Some of the most beautiful architecture is highlighted in the churches – and we pass around 15 of them on this route.  It’s a great week to invite new runners and beginners – because you can easily stop after just 2 miles of the first loop of the figure 8.

We meet at the corner of 11th & Holly at 6pm. We run every Wednesday – rain or shine, hot or cold. If you are a run/walker and want to get a head start, meet at 5:45pm and join our Lasty Nasty Group. You can READ HERE for more details on how our Wednesday night runs work. Remember we share the roads with walkers, cyclists, and cars – please, stay on the sidewalks or to the far left on the road, obey traffic signals and stop signs, and cross only in marked crosswalks. Help us be good neighbors to the community!

Wednesday Dec 5 - Holiday Party!
en_mapbanner_route_10-share-2018-12-05.jpg

Tomorrow (Wednesday) night is our annual Holiday Party! We hope you will join us for the run and then the party (immediately after the run) at Smith & Lentz Brewing! Even if you can't make the run, you are welcome to come to the party!

Route #10

First things first - this week is Route #10: Electric SlideSafety note: you need to be extra cautious at one particular intersection. Right before the three mile mark, you turn left onto 14th from Sevier. Before you turn left onto 14th from Sevier, you need to STOP, look for traffic, then cross the street and RUN ON THE SIDEWALK on the RIGHT SIDE of 14th. BE VERY CAREFUL CROSSING 14th! For those of you who know the area, make sure you alert those around you.

Remember we share the roads with walkers, cyclists, and cars – please help us be good neighbors!

Immediately after the run, we will have our...

2018 Holiday Party!

Our annual Holiday Party is here! After the run everyone is invited to join us at Smith & Lentz Brewing for some food, brews, and fun. We will celebrate the past year and look forward to the next! We’ll have White Bean Chicken Chili and Vegan Butternut Squash Carrot Soup (for as long as it lasts), and S&L will be offering a $1 discount on pints. If you are so inclined, feel free to bring a sweet treat for dessert to share. FYI - Smith & Lentz is kid friendly!

We do ask that you bring a suggested minimum donation of $10. East Nasty is organized under the umbrella of the Road Runners Club of America, and there are costs associated with that along with our operations. You donation allows us to maintain our 501c3 non-profit standing, our club insurance, and keep doing all the things we do – such as offer free half and full marathon training, a free couch to 5k program, our big Post-Marathon Party, etc. We’ll also have some East Nasty gear for sale if you are looking for Christmas gifts!

We wanna say a special thanks Phil and Gretchen Zimmerman who have hosted the party each year in the past. While we've outgrown their space, we are so thankful for their dedicated support of the club through the years!

Last but not least - please drink responsibly! and tip the S&L gang well!

Wednesday Nov 28 - Stadium Run
en_mapbanner_route_09-share.jpg

Route #9

Remember just a couple months ago when it was sunny and bright? Now it's dark and cold out there. Just like how the Titans season seems to be going. This week is Route #9: Nissan Stadium – express your sadness, anger, or hope as we run around the home to your Tennessee Titans. Safety notes: Please be sure to cross 10th street at the stop-sign and crosswalk at 10th & Fatherland. The increase in density and parking on 10th has made visibility much more difficult – so we need you to be sure to stop at the stop sign, use the crosswalk, and absolutely not cross in the middle of the road. Check out the route map on Strava: https://www.strava.com/routes/8843009

Remember we share the roads with walkers, cyclists, and cars – please help us be good neighbors!

Holiday Party Next Week!

Our annual Holiday Party is set for NEXT Wednesday December 5th. We’ll have our normal run, then immediately afterward everyone is invited to join us at Smith & Lentz Brewing for some food, brews, and fun. We’ll have complimentary chili and vegan soup, and S&L will be offering a $1 discount on pints. Smith & Lentz is kid friendly! This is also a time where we get a list of our “members” and pay our bills. East Nasty is organized and recognized non-profit status under the umbrella of the Road Runners Club of America, and there are some dues associated with that along with our operations. So, if you consider yourself a part of East Nasty, we ask each of you to bring a suggested minimum donation of $10 to help us offset these costs. This allows us to keep doing all the things we do – such as offer free half and full marathon training, a free couch to 5k program, our big Post-Marathon Party, insurance for the club, etc. We may also have some East Nasty gear for sale if you are looking for Christmas gifts!

2019 Half and Full Marathon Training

Mark your calendars! East Nasty Half and Full Marathon training begins January 5th at 8:00 a.m.  This is a free training series designed to prepare you to run the Rock’n’Roll Nashville half or full marathon in April. Training is free and all paces are encouraged to join. Watch for registration information coming soon…
